v\u00e6rt d\u00f8d lenge fordi modellene ikke lenger fulgte det originale konseptet. Da Ford lanserte Thunderbird i 1955, var det for \u00e5 ta opp konkurransen med Chevrolet Corvette. Modellen ble markedsf\u00f8rt som \u201ca personal luxury car\u201d for \u00e5 signalisere at Ford ikke hadde noen sportslige ambisjoner. En liten, smekker bil med stor motor og 2 seter var likevel ikke s\u00e5 langt unna Corvette, skj\u00f8nt de to modellene skulle utvikle seg i helt forskjellige retninger.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI l\u00f8pet av 50-\u00e5rene ble alle amerikanske biler mer omfangsrike &#8211; b\u00e5de i st\u00f8rrelse og utstyrsgrad &#8211; en utvikling som Thunderbird ble en del av. I 1958 fikk modellen 4 seter. Bilene ble st\u00f8rre, fikk mer Chrome og mer utstyr &#8211; og p\u00e5 slutten av 60-\u00e5rene kunne man s\u00e5gar f\u00e5 Thunderbird med 4 d\u00f8rer. Etter hvert skulle Thunderbird bli mer og mer lik Fords \u00f8vrige modeller. De siste modellene fremsto som en 2-d\u00f8rs variant av familiebilen Taurus. Men etter 4 \u00e5r valgte Ford \u00e5 produsere en ny generasjon av Thunderbird basert p\u00e5 et retro roadster design. Dette var en tid da det gikk en retro-b\u00f8lge gjennom bilindustrien. Nye Ford Thunderbird ble lansert som 2002-modell. P\u00e5 h\u00f8sten ble James Bond-filmen \u201cDie Another Day\u201d med <em>Pierce Brosnan<\/em> og <em>Halle Berry<\/em> vist p\u00e5 kinoene. Ford hadde lykkes med \u00e5 plassere sin nye modell i et par scener. God reklame. For 2003 produserte de 700 eksemplarer av \u201c007\u201d bilen i den spesielle korallr\u00f8de fargen.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n2002-modellen solgte litt bedre enn Ford&#8217;s forventninger &#8211; som l\u00e5 langt under hva forgjengeren solgte. \u00c5ret etter sank salget til det halve &#8211; og fortsatte \u00e5 falle. Dermed endte retro-modellen som en salgsmessig flopp. I enkelte forum fremstilles den siste modellen som en \u00e5rsak til at Thunderbird forsvant.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nDet er vanskelig \u00e5 si n\u00e5r Thunderbird egentlig \u201cd\u00f8de\u201d &#8211; eller endte opp som temmelig uinteressante biler. Kanskje skjedde det p\u00e5 slutten av 70-\u00e5rene? Kanskje skjedde det med Fords 8. generasjon av Thunderbird? Den var kasseformet og fikk en smakl\u00f8s landau-top &#8211; et design som var utdatert allerede p\u00e5 lanseringstidspunktet. Vi skal heller ikke utelukke at sedaner med 2 d\u00f8rer ikke var like popul\u00e6re som tidligere. 2 d\u00f8rer var forbeholdt sportsbiler og Thunderbird var, som kjent, ingen sportsbil.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nPoenget er at det neppe var 2002-modellen som gjorde slutt p\u00e5 Thunderbird. Ford lot simpelthen modellen d\u00f8 langsomt over flere decennier. Ideen til baklysene m\u00e5 v\u00e6re hentet fra den 3. generasjonen. Formen gir assosiasjoner til utbl\u00e5sningene fra en 2-motors jet-fighter. Retro-designet ser kanskje finere ut i dag &#8211; enn det gjorde da modellen ble lansert for mer enn 20 \u00e5r siden. Interi\u00f8ret er tradisjonelt for sin tidsepoke &#8211; verken retro eller moderne. Innfelte dekor-elementer av aluminium bidrar litt til \u00e5 h\u00f8yne inntrykket noe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plattform<\/strong><br \/>\nThunderbird er bygget p\u00e5 Fords DEW98 plattform som ogs\u00e5 ble benyttet av Lincoln LS og Jaguar S-Type p\u00e5 samme tid. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Drivverk<\/strong><br \/>\nMotoren er en 3,9 V8 med 280 hk utviklet av Jaguar f\u00f8r Ford overtok selskapet. Tidlige utgaver av denne motorserien hadde problemer med Nikasil-behandlede sylinder-f\u00f4ringer, men dette ble fikset lenge f\u00f8r produksjonen av Thunderbird begynte. AJ-35 motorene til Ford Thunderbird og s\u00f8stermodellen Lincoln Laser er for \u00f8vrig ikke produsert i England. De er produsert i USA.
