De var ogs\u00e5 delaktig i produksjon av fly, raketter og avanserte v\u00e5pen. Et samarbeid mellom Matra og Renault h\u00f8rtes lovende ut, selv om de fleste assosierte Matra med <em>Simca\/Talbot<\/em> &#8211; ikke Renault. Forklaringen er at Espace startet som et Talbot-prosjekt hos Chrysler UK, men havnet hos PSA da de tok over Chrysler Europe p\u00e5 slutten av 70-tallet. Der fikk den spesielle monospace-modellen &laquo;tommel ned&raquo; og ble gitt til Matra som hadde v\u00e6rt involvert i prosjektet fra starten av.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Slektsb\u00e5nd til Murena<\/h3>\n<p>Matra var kjent for racing, Formel 1 og sportslige biler &#8211; ikke kj\u00f8ret\u00f8y som Espace. Likevel gjorde de Espace unik ved \u00e5 konstruere den p\u00e5 samme m\u00e5te som Matra-Simca Murena &#8211;  med karosseri av plastforsterket glassfiber p\u00e5 varmgalvanisert \u00abspace frame\u00bb ramme. Da Matra inngikk et samarbeid med Renault om \u00e5 produsere Espace, m\u00e5tte Murena vike plass etter bare 3 \u00e5r. <\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56479\" C\u00e9ret, FR, 2022.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Med Simca og Talbot i lasten<\/h3>\n<p>Hjulopphenget fikk doble A-armer foran og torsjonsfj\u00e6ring bak som ga god plassutnyttelse i kupeen. Drivverket var hentet fra Renault 25 med langsstilt motor og drift p\u00e5 forhjulene. Monospace-karosseriet ga d\u00e5rlig tilgang til motorrommet, blant annet var det vanskelig \u00e5 skifte clutch. Folk som har mekket p\u00e5 tidlige Espace-biler opplyser om at de har funnet deler som er merket &laquo;Simca&raquo;. Da Renault valgte \u00e5 fornye Espace i 1988, fjernet de alle spor etter Simca\/Talbot. Den opprinnelige fronten som var tilpasset Talbots modellprogram, ble ogs\u00e5 endret. Den nye, underbitte formen ga Espace et mer &laquo;mainstream&raquo; preg og \u00f8kte bilens totallengde med 11 cm.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Modellhistorikk<\/h3>\n<p>Ettersom firkantede, kubiske karosserier gikk av moten p\u00e5 90-tallet kom Espace mk2 i ny utgave med rundere linjer og et tammere, mer anonymt preg. Chassis og konstruksjon var uendret fra tidligere. Interi\u00f8ret var i store trekk beholdt, bortsett fra nye instrumenter og brytere. Ogs\u00e5 neste modell, Espace mk3 fra 1996, bygde p\u00e5 Matras unike plattform, men fikk st\u00f8rre endringer i karosseriet og et nytt, midtstilt instrumentbord med romskipsf\u00f8lelse. I 2002 valgte Renault \u00e5 produsere Espace selv. De skapte en konvensjonell h\u00f8ybygd bil basert p\u00e5 Laguna. Ikke bare ble den st\u00f8rre, men ogs\u00e5 mye tyngre og mindre spesiell. Legg merke til frav\u00e6ret av mobiltelefoner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Allsidig<\/h3>\n<p>Det er verdt \u00e5 nevne at Espace ikke bare skulle v\u00e6re et kj\u00f8ret\u00f8y for <em>transport<\/em>, men ogs\u00e5 tilby livsstilskvaliteter. Innvendig fikk man en helt spesiell romf\u00f8lelse med store vinduer rund baut og to soltak av glass. Framstolene kunne roteres, og de \u00f8vrige stolene kunne flyttes og vendes. Man kunne lett omvandle interi\u00f8ret til et m\u00f8terom med stolene rundt et bord. En mer praktisk egenskap var muligheten til \u00e5 ta ut stoler for \u00e5 frakte store gjenstander. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Klasse<\/h3>\n<p>Jeg s\u00e5 Matra-Renault Espace mk1 f\u00f8rste gang p\u00e5 Charles de Gaulle-flyplassen i Paris. Mitt f\u00f8rsteinntrykk var at den hadde klasse. Den rette og kantede linjef\u00f8ringen minnet om legender som Range Rover, Aston Martin Lagonda og den da helt nye Volvo 760. Espace var ingen vanlig bil. Men hva la folk mest vekt p\u00e5? Plassen og de praktiske l\u00f8sningene? De gode kj\u00f8regenskapene? Eller falt man for bilens sportslige gener? Det ble faktisk laget en prototype l\u00f8psversjon av Espace mk2 &#8211; kalt Espace F1. Selv om Espace var rask og velkj\u00f8rende, var det ingen racerbil. Poenget med \u00e5 fremheve modellens sportslige gener var kanskje \u00e5 skape en klasse for \u00e5 distansere seg fra konkurrerende, simplere modeller &#8211; og varebiler med ekstra seter. Frankrike er fremdeles et klassedelt samfunn. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Om bildene<\/h3>\n<p>Det finnes ikke mange Espace igjen som er produsert av Matra. Tidlige modeller er heller ikke spesielt kostbare &#8211; de fleste mk1 og mk2 selges under 50 000 kroner for biler som fortsatt er i daglig bruk andre steder i Europa. I \u00f8yeblikket har jeg kun funnet 3 biler til salgs som kan kalles bevaringsverdige &#8211; 2 stk til 100 000 og 1 til NOK 240 000 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesanciennes.com\/annonce\/renault-matra-espace-j116-limited-1990-a566698\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>link<\/strong><\/a>). I h\u00f8st observerte jeg en Espace mk1 fase 2 bil i min franske by. Den er i daglig drift og tar seg godt ut mellom franske steinhus og platantr\u00e6r. Jeg har ogs\u00e5 tatt bilder av en mk2 bil uten skilter midlertidig etterlatt p\u00e5 en bensinstasjon utenfor Oslo. Jeg studerte den p\u00e5 n\u00e6rt hold, og ble positivt overrasket over \u00e5 finne s\u00e5 mange likheter med mk1.
