Navnet hadde en historie helt tilbake til 1890. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2_first\">Ble kj\u00f8pt opp av Lord Nuffield like f\u00f8r krigen<\/h3>\n<p>Som s\u00e5 mange andre bilprodusenter i England, startet fabrikken som sykkelprodusent. Ikke s\u00e5 rart, det raste en intens sykkelb\u00f8lge over landet p\u00e5 den tiden. Men, som mange andre sykkelprodusenter, s\u00e5 fabrikken en stor fremtid i bilproduksjon. Den aller f\u00f8rste bilen fra Riley ble ferdig i 1898 men fabrikken satset p\u00e5 motorsykler i starten. Den f\u00f8rste serieproduserte bilen s\u00e5 dagens lys i 1907. Helt frem til krigen i 1939 var produksjonen preget av et utall forskjellige varianter og modeller. Riley var en l\u00f8nnsom bilprodusent i starten, men produktutvikling og investeringer i fabrikker og produksjonsutstyr ble til slutt for mye. Det ble konkurs i 1938 og fabrikken ble overtatt av Lord Nuffield og et nytt firma ble etablert. Bilene beholdt sitt gamle navn, men produksjonen ble stoppet da krigen br\u00f8t ut i 1939.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">RM &#8211; serie<\/h3>\n<p>Da freden kom i 1945 lanserte fabrikken nye modeller som var helt egenutviklet. De f\u00f8rste modellene fikk typebetegnelsene RMA og RMB som var en litt st\u00f8rre modell med lengre akselavstand. De nye bilene fra Riley var b\u00e5de elegante og sportslige. Konkurrentene p\u00e5 det engelske markedet kom stort sett med oppgraderte f\u00f8rkrigsmodeller. Derfor ble de nye modellene fra Riley spesielt godt mottatt. Motorpressen var sv\u00e6rt positive og fremtidsutsiktene var lyse. Men i 1952 ble Nuffield som produserte Riley sl\u00e5tt sammen med Austin og resultatet ble British Motor Corporation. Tanken var \u00e5 utnytte felles resurser for \u00e5 st\u00e5 sterkere p\u00e5 bilmarkedet internasjonalt. Men resultatet ble at de forskjellige bilmerkene som Austin, Morris, MG, Riley og Wolseley ble sv\u00e6rt like. Stort sett var det detaljer og utstyr som skilte de forskjellige merkene. Den siste \u201dekte\u201d modellen fra Riley var Pathfinder som kom i 1953. De popul\u00e6re RM modellene forsvant i 1955.
