(source: Favcars.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<h5>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">&#8211; &laquo;Ford er gode biler&raquo;<\/h3>\n<p>Farmoren min var ingen bilekspert, men gjennom et langt liv hadde hun dannet seg en klar oppfatning av Ford. Jeg er sikker p\u00e5 at flere har h\u00f8rt det samme fra sine besteforeldre. Sp\u00f8rsm\u00e5let er: Hvilken Ford tenkte de egentlig p\u00e5? For min farmor var det bilene fra  mellomkrigstiden. Da var ikke bil allemannseie. De var eid av doktorer, drosjeeiere, dyrleger, postmenn og storb\u00f8nder. Blant dem var det sikkert mange som kj\u00f8rte Ford &#8211; og som sverget til dette bilmerket hele livet.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Kanskje p\u00e5 grunn av Fords flathead V-8<\/h3>\n<p>Det var ikke Ford som oppfant V8-motoren, men de brakte den ut til folket. I 1932 ble A-Forden avl\u00f8st av en modell som lignet forgjengeren, men som hadde f\u00e5tt et V8-krusifiks festet mellom frontlyktene. Det var modell 18, som etter hvert skulle bli kalt Ford V-8. Motoren ble kalt flathead V8 p\u00e5 grunn av toppenes utforming. Helt flate metallstykker uten bevegelige deler. Ventilene satt i blokka og ble drevet av \u00e9n kamaksel.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Ingen optimal konstruksjon<\/h3>\n<p>Motoren var i produksjon i over 20 \u00e5r, og det ble gjort flere endringer og forbedringer underveis. Blant annet i ulike varianter med hensyn til slagvolum. Men de flate toppene ble beholdt gjennom hele levetiden. Sett med dagens \u00f8yne, var det ingen optimal konstruksjon. Den sideventilerte l\u00f8sningen ga et L-formet forbrenningskammer (L-en snudd p\u00e5 hodet). Utformingen i to kamre gjorde at man ikke kunne f\u00e5 s\u00e6rlig h\u00f8y kompresjon. En annen svakhet med flathead-toppene var lite effektiv luftgjennomstr\u00f8mning. Inntak og eksos p\u00e5 samme side gj\u00f8r at luftstr\u00f8mmen m\u00e5 vendes mellom innsug og utbl\u00e5sning. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Billig og driftssikker<\/h3>\n<p>En av Fords styrke var at de greidde \u00e5 produsere bilene p\u00e5 en billig m\u00e5te. Det var det som gjorde at bilene ble tilgjengelige for mannen i gata &#8211; s\u00e5 ogs\u00e5 med V8-motorene. Flathead-motorene var enklere \u00e5 produsere enn nyere konstruksjoner med overliggende ventiler (OHV). Dessuten var de godt tilpasset 30-tallets motoroljer som var langt d\u00e5rligere enn vi har i dag. Alt som trenger sm\u00f8ring, ligger i midten av motoren. Som en kuriositet kan det nevnes at motorer f\u00f8r 1940 ikke hadde oljefilter. Det kom f\u00f8rst etter krigen &#8211; da som tilvalg. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Enkle forbedringer<\/h3>\n<p>Hvis du kj\u00f8per en nyere overhalt motor i dag &#8211; eller skal gj\u00f8re en jobb i motoren, finnes det enkle grep for \u00e5 forbedre motoren. Det er lett \u00e5 skaffe deler. Trimming av flathead-motorer har lenge v\u00e6rt et marked i USA. Det ligger flere tusen annonser p\u00e5 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ebay<\/strong><\/a>. Nyproduserte topper kan gi bedre kompresjon og bedre luftgjennomstr\u00f8mning. De er ikke billige, men anbefales. Videre finnes det &laquo;kit&raquo; for \u00e5 montere oljefilter der dette mangler. Den gamle fordeleren kan byttes ut med elektronisk tenning. Ny(e) forgasser(e) med nye luftinntak, inntaksmanifold, eksosmanifold og forgreningsr\u00f8r f\u00e5r b\u00e5de motorrommet til \u00e5 se flottere ut og gir \u00f8kt effekt. Det beste av alt, er at det finnes mye litteratur og mange innlegg p\u00e5 YouTube som forteller hvordan man fikser ting.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Effekt av flathead V8<\/h3>\n<p>Standard etterkrigsmotorer gir vanligvis 100-110 HK ved 3500 omdreininger. Maks dreiemoment f\u00e5r man rundt 2000 omdreininger og det ligger p\u00e5 omkring 180-200 Nm. Med forbedringene nevnt tidligere, kan effekten \u00f8kes med rundt 30 HK. Det gir bilene mer enn nok krefter til \u00e5 f\u00f8lge med i dagens trafikk. I sin tid ble flathead-motorene satt inn i hotrods og andre kj\u00f8ret\u00f8y man brukte til racing. I dag er vel poenget med en s\u00e5nn motor \u00e5 bringe tilbake nostalgien fra fordums biler. Den lune, buldrende lyden av V8-motoren, det gode dreiemomentet i vanlig trafikk og driftssikkerheten. De samme grunnene som gjorde motorene popul\u00e6re som folke-V8&#8217;ere.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Et liv etter d\u00f8den<\/h3>\n<p>Da den siste amerikanske modell med flathead-motoren rullet ut i 1953 &#8211; eller der omkring &#8211; hadde Ford g\u00e5tt over til en annen small-block V8 basert p\u00e5 et mer moderne OHV design. Men ledelsen i Ford tenkte at den gamle sideventilerte flathead-motoren kunne egne seg i europeisk etterkrigs bilindustri. De etablerte en fabrikk i Frankrike og startet Vedette-programmet med en variant av flathead-motoren med forminsket slagvolum &#8211; 135 kubikktommer &#8211; eller 2,2 liter. Ford trodde at europeerne ville ta i mot V8-motorene med \u00e5pne armer som de gjorde i USA 20 \u00e5r tidligere. Men da Frankrike og andre europeiske land begynte \u00e5 skattlegge biler basert p\u00e5 hestekrefter, valgte Ford \u00e5 trekke seg ut. Vedette-programmet og fabrikken i Poissy ble overtatt av Simca &#8211; som i dag inng\u00e5r i PSA-gruppen. <\/p>\n<h3>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2bigger\">En liten bildekavalkade<\/h3>\n<p>Bildene er tatt forskjellige steder. Det er modeller som alle gjorde suksess med flathead V8. Vi har tatt en titt i kj\u00f8ret\u00f8yregisteret og funnet chassis nummer s\u00e5nn at vi kan si hvilken motor bilene hadde da de rullet ut fra fabrikken.
