Fabrikken ble startet av Herbert Austin i 1905 som Austin Motor Company.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n<p>Den f\u00f8rste modellen var en stor 5-liters bil med 4 sylindre. Frem mot 1. verdenskrig ble det produsert en rekke forskjellige modeller. I 1922 lanserte Austin den ber\u00f8mte 7, en liten og rimelig bil. Den traff markedet meget bra og den ble ogs\u00e5 produsert av BMW som Dixi. Etter 2. Verdenskrig kom fabrikken fort p\u00e5 markedet med nye modeller. I 1952 gikk Austin sammen med Morris og dannet BMC (British Motor Corporation). Mest kjente modell p\u00e5 50 og 60-tallet ble Austin og Morris Mini. Mini-Cooper gjorde merket ber\u00f8mt i bill\u00f8p p\u00e5 60-tallet. Andre popul\u00e6r modeller var Austin Cambridge og Austin 1100. For \u00e5 erstatte den aldrende Mini modellen ble det utviklet en ny sm\u00e5bil som ble lansert i 1980 med betegnelsen Mini Metro. Den dukket ogs\u00e5 opp under andre merker som ble produsert av British Leyland.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Skulle konkurrere med Land-Rover<\/h3>\n<p>En helt spesiell og lite kjent modell fra Austin fikk navnet \u201dGipsy\u201d. Austin introduserte denne modellen som en erstatning for Austin Champ. M\u00e5let var \u00e5 tilby en modell som skulle konkurrere direkte med Land-Rover. Gipsy ble introdusert med modellvarianter som var sv\u00e6rt likt de modellene som Land-Rover produserte. Modellen fra Austin ble utstyrt med et meget avansert fj\u00e6rsystem. Her var det uavhengig fj\u00e6ring p\u00e5 alle hjul. Systemet var utviklet av Alex Moulton og fikk navnet &laquo;Flexitor&raquo;. Systemet brukte gummifj\u00e6rer som skulle gi bedre fremkommelighet og st\u00f8rre komfort ved kj\u00f8ring i terreng. For \u00e5 gj\u00f8re modellen kjent, satset Austin p\u00e5 mange \u201dstunt\u201d for \u00e5 f\u00e5 publisitet rundt denne modellen. Problemet var at Land-Rover hadde et solid grep p\u00e5 \u201doff-road\u201d markedet, og hadde flere varianter \u00e5 tilby. Da BMC ble sl\u00e5tt sammen med Leyland til \u201dBritish Leyland\u201d havnet Land-Rover og Austin Gipsy i samme firma. Produksjonen av \u201dGipsy\u201d ble stoppet etter ca 21000 biler hadde blitt produsert.<br \/>\nAustin \u201dGipsy\u201d ble produsert mellom 1958 og 1968.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Fakta om Austin
