Mange fikk stifte bekjentskap med bilen gjennom TV-serien Miami Vice. Ferrari hadde donert to biler til produksjonsselskapet. De var i sort metallic med kremfarget interi\u00f8r, men ble lakkert om fordi hvitt sannsynligvis kledde Don Johnson bedre. Elton John skal ha f\u00e5tt en av plateselskapet MCA Records. Den var r\u00f8d med &laquo;tan&raquo; interi\u00f8r. Det sies at Elton John regelmessig s\u00f8rger for \u00e5 kj\u00f8re alle sine biler. Ogs\u00e5 Testarossa&#8217;en som etter hvert ble auksjonert bort &#8211; og som vel er auksjonert bort minst \u00e9n gang til senere. Under det h\u00e5ndlagde glassfiberkarosseriet skjuler det seg en <em>gammel<\/em> bil, teknologisk low-tech etter dagens standard. Jeg h\u00f8rte en eier uttale at <em>&laquo;du kj\u00f8per ikke en Esprit p\u00e5 grunn av ytelser &#8211; du kj\u00f8per den fordi det er en Esprit&raquo;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Motorisering<\/h3>\n<p>Esprit-modellen ble produsert i flere serier fra 1976 til 2004. De f\u00f8rste bilene var utstyrt med midtplasserte 2,2-liters rekkefirer-motorer utviklet av Lotus selv. Ytelsene var beskjedne 160 HK. Esprit var aldri noen superbil f\u00f8r 1980 da den fikk turbo og 210 HK. Etter hvert greidde Lotus \u00e5 ta ut 300 HK fra turbomotoren. I 1996 &#8211; tjue \u00e5r etter introduksjonen &#8211; fikk Esprit V8-motorer. Twin-turbo-motoren ga 350 hester og l\u00f8ftet Esprit opp i superbil-klassen.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Tung p\u00e5 styringen. D\u00e5rlig svingradius. Lav stittestilling og veldig direkte kontakt med veien. &laquo;Alt&raquo; formidles til f\u00f8rer. Dette er en bil som krever tilvenning.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Uttalelsene stammer fra biltestere som bektraktet Esprit med dagens \u00f8yne. \u00c9n ting er alle enige om. Interi\u00f8ret. Alt er kledt i ekte skinn &#8211; h\u00e5ndlaget engelsk kvalitet &#8211; utformet som en &laquo;man-cave&raquo;. Det skal befinne seg \u00e9n annen BMW av samme modell ett eller annet sted i Norge, men sannsynligheten for \u00e5 m\u00f8te noen av dem p\u00e5 veien er sv\u00e6rt liten.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">En vakker barokkengel<\/h3>\n<p>BMWs s\u00e6regne 50-tallsmodeller 501 og 502 ble p\u00e5 folkemunne kalt barokkengel. Coup\u00e9-modellen 503 som f\u00f8rst dukket opp som 1956-modell, var en 2-d\u00f8rs, 2+2 seters GT-modell som ble levert med kun ett motoralternativ. Motoren var hentet fra BMW 502. 3,2 liter V8, 2 forgassere, 140 HK og 4-trinns manuell girkasse. Det er ingen tvil om at det under den vakre drakten befant seg en barokkengel &#8211; en sv\u00e6rt vakker barokkengel.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Lite l\u00f8nnsom<\/h3>\n<p>Produksjonen p\u00e5gikk fra 1956 til mars 1959. Med tanke p\u00e5 det lekre designet og motoriseringen, kunne modellen sikkert ha v\u00e6rt produsert til langt ut p\u00e5 60-tallet. Men BMW stanset produksjonen p\u00e5 grunn av d\u00e5rlig l\u00f8nnsomhet. Totalt ble det produsert 413 biler. Det er flere faktorer som tilsier h\u00f8y pris &#8211; f\u00e5 eksemplarer, bygget som kvalitetsbil, vakker og p\u00e5kostet for sin tid. Det er forunderlig at disse bilene ikke slo bedre an. BMW&#8217;ene kunne ikke hamle opp med datidens amerikanske biler med hensyn til krom og ytre dimensjoner, &#8211; men det kunne jo ikke Mercedes-Benz SL heller. Det kunne den  i 1959 da begge kom med helt nye modeller. Mercedes&#8217; nye W110 og W111 &#8211; den s\u00e5kalte &laquo;finne-Mercedesen&raquo; var kanskje den beste serieproduserte bilen for sin tid. \u00c5ret f\u00f8r hadde Opel lansert en helt ny Opel Kaptein med store finner og panoramaruter foran og bak. P1 lignet en amerikaner, men ble for sterk kost for sindige europeere. Mange klaget over d\u00e5rlig sikt gjennom panoramavinduene og trang adkomst til baksetet fordi bakruta faktisk krummet seg inn i d\u00f8r\u00e5pningen. Den solgte s\u00e5 d\u00e5rlig at ledelsen i Opel begynte \u00e5 utforme en ny Kaptein &#8211; P2 &#8211; som kom allerede \u00e5ret etter i 1959.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Vakreste Opel noensinne<\/h3>\n<p>Det var ingen hemmelighet at P2 var utformet p\u00e5 samme plattform som P1. De to bilene hadde samme akselavstand, mens den nye var litt bredere, litt lengre &#8211; og litt mindre amerikansk.
