Den ble skapt av NSU og skulle produseres i Neckarsulm. Opprinnelig ble det vurdert \u00e5 utstyre den med Wankel-motor, men planene ble endret da NSU ikke greidde \u00e5 f\u00e5 teknologien produksjonsklar. I stedet utviklet de en ny 1,6 liters 75 hesters vannavkj\u00f8lt bensinmotor basert p\u00e5 den luftavkj\u00f8lte motoren fra NSU 1200\/TT. Forut for Gen\u00e8ve-utstillingen i 1969 var NSU klare til \u00e5 presentere en fremtidsrettet, moderne, vakker og \u00f8konomisk verdensnyhet som de kalte K70.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">RO-70?<\/h3>\n<p>Opprinnelig vurderte NSU \u00e5 la modellen inng\u00e5 i sitt Wankelprogram. I ettertid kan man spekulere i om NSU hadde tenkt \u00e5 kalle modellen for RO-70 (&laquo;Ro&raquo; for Rotary). &laquo;70&raquo; fordi den skulle lanseres som en mindre modell enn RO-80. Men siden Wankel-motoren var byttet ut med en vanlig stempelmotor, ble navnet K70 &#8211; &laquo;K&raquo; for &laquo;kolben&raquo; (tysk: stempel). Kanskje planen var \u00e5 relansere RO-70 n\u00e5r Wankel-alternativet ble ferdig? Men situasjonen endret seg drastisk. RO-80-eiere opplevde motorhavarier p\u00e5 rekke og rad. Massive garantikrav sendte fabrikken i \u00f8konomisk krise. K70 skulle aldri bli lansert av NSU.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Passet d\u00e5rlig inn i modellprogrammet<\/h3>\n<p>Da Volkswagen kj\u00f8pte opp NSU, fikk de K70 i fanget. En ferdig utviklet, moderne familiebil klar til produksjon. Det var en bil helt ulik Volkswagens eksisterende modellprogram. Volkswagen-gruppen <em>kunne<\/em> ha satt 4 ringer i grillen og sendt den ut som en Audi, men da ville den konkurrere med Audi 100. Hos Volkswagen valgte de heller \u00e5 lansere K70 som en etterf\u00f8lger etter Type 4 &#8211; bedre kjent som 411\/412-serien. Begge modellene skulle produseres og selges parallelt.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Nytt merke i grillen &#8211; voil\u00e0!<\/h3>\n<p>Det er i ettertid kjent at Volkswagen ikke gjorde noe annet med K70 enn \u00e5 erstatte NSU-merket i grillen. Velkj\u00f8rende, men tung p\u00e5 styringen. Det var alle forhjulsdrevne biler p\u00e5 den tiden. Mye vekt foran framakslingen, trygge kj\u00f8reegenskaper med mye understyring. Tidlige modeller var kjent for \u00e5 v\u00e6re litt leie \u00e5 gire, men giroverf\u00f8ringen ble endret underveis i produksjonen. Driftssikkerheten var i utgangspunket god &#8211; med unntak av vannpumpa som m\u00e5tte byttes ganske ofte. 1,6-motoren var jo opprinnelig luftavkj\u00f8lt. Ut over 70-tallet begynte imidlertid K70 \u00e5 f\u00e5 et d\u00e5rlig rykte for driftssikkerheten &#8211; ikke fordi bilene var d\u00e5rlige, men fordi ettermarkedet sviktet.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Hva gikk galt?<\/h3>\n<p>Innf\u00f8ringen av K70 skjedde uten at salgsapparatet og ettermarkedet var tilstrekkelig forberedt. Modellen ble bokstavelig talt tr\u00e6dd over hodene p\u00e5 organisasjonen. Selgerne, som i flere ti\u00e5r hadde argumentert for luftavkj\u00f8lte, hekkmotoriserte biler med runde karosseriformer, fikk plutselig en modell som br\u00f8t med alt dette. Verkstedene var heller ikke tilstrekkelig forberedt. Man kan si at mange K70-kunder opplevde \u00e5 bli stemoderlig behandlet.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Forut for sin tid<\/h3>\n<p>De som allerede kj\u00f8rte Volkswagens luftavkj\u00f8lte familie-modeller, var ikke klare for en modell som var minst to bilgenerasjoner nyere enn 411 og 412. Skulle K70 sl\u00e5 an, m\u00e5tte den stjele kunder fra andre merker &#8211; fortrinnsvis kunder som foretrakk forhjulstrekk. P\u00e5 begynnelsen av 70-tallet var familiebil-klassen dominert av biler med bakhjulstrekk. Kunder som valgte forhjulstrekk, var allerede lojale til merker som Citroen, Renault og Saab.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Burde f\u00e5tt et annet navn<\/h3>\n<p>Det var ikke bare ukjent design og teknologi som gjorde at K70 ble stemoderlig behandlet innad hos Volkswagen. Det var <em>navnet<\/em>. Det hadde ingen tilh\u00f8righet til Volkswagen, og skapte heller ingen lojalitet. &laquo;K&raquo; for kolben. Seri\u00f8st? &laquo;70&raquo; &#8211;  for hva da? Antall hester? Neppe! Tenk om Volkswagen hadde valgt \u00e5 kalle NSU&#8217;s flotte nyskapning for &laquo;Passat&raquo; eller &laquo;Golf&raquo;? <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_35860\" har eid og kj\u00f8rt K70 i yngre dager. Han forteller om en spesiell episode med sin K70 &#8211; eller &laquo;Key-Seven-Zero&raquo; som den ble kalt p\u00e5 flystasjonen der han tjenestegjorde i yngre dager. K70 var utstyrt med innenbordsbremser foran &#8211; akkurat som sin &laquo;storebror&raquo; NSU Ro80. Det vil si at skivebremsene ikke var montert ute ved <em>hjulene<\/em>, men i andre enden av drivakslene. Bremseoket var festet inn mot girkasse\/differensial. Etter \u00e5 ha skiftet motor hadde han f\u00e5tt problemer med \u00e5 feste drivakslingene inn mot differensialen p\u00e5 grunn av &laquo;s\u00f8nderskrudde&raquo; bolter. En kveld  p\u00e5 vei til en date kj\u00f8rte han i full fart ned en bakke hvor han m\u00e5tte hogge inn bremsene. Da l\u00f8snet begge drivakslene! Resultatet kunne blitt fatalt. Med l\u00f8se drivaksler mistet han nemlig bremsene foran &#8211; fordi skivene sitter innerst p\u00e5 akslene og roterer med disse. Uten drivaksler kunne han heller ikke bremse p\u00e5 motoren. Det gjorde ikke situasjonen bedre at bakbremsene var utslitte og at h\u00e5ndbremsen for \u00f8yeblikket var demontert. Ferden endte heldigvis i noe buskas. Den uheldige bileieren fikk haik &#8211; og daten ble reddet &#8211; selv om K70&#8217;en alts\u00e5 m\u00e5tte st\u00e5 igjen i buskene.
