Men fabrikken ble startet allerede i 1928 som produsent av metallprodukter. Etter hvert valgte van Doorne som eide fabrikken \u00e5 satse p\u00e5 produksjon av tilhengere for lastebiler. Produktene var bra og produksjonen og foresp\u00f8rslene str\u00f8mmet p\u00e5. Resultatet ble at van Doorne valgte \u00e5 kutte ut produksjon av metallvarer og fokusere p\u00e5 transportmateriell p\u00e5 hjul. Nytt navn fikk fabrikken ogs\u00e5, det skulle fortelle hva fabrikken produserte. Det nye navnet kom i 1932 og det var &laquo;Van Doorne&#8217;s Aanhangwagenfabriek&raquo; som ogs\u00e5 ble forkortet til DAF. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">F\u00f8rst lastebiler<\/h3>\n<p>Fabrikken ekspanderte og man begynte \u00e5 produsere lastebiler p\u00e5 lisens. Senere kom det en rekke egne modeller. I tiden etter 1945 \u00f8ket produksjonen av spesielle lastebiler til privat og milit\u00e6rt bruk. DAF var n\u00e5 en betydelig produsent av lastebiler men \u00f8nsket ogs\u00e5 \u00e5 starte produksjon av personbiler. Utviklingsarbeidet startet i 1954 og den f\u00f8rste prototypen ble vist i 1957. Den dukket opp p\u00e5 markedet i 1959.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">S\u00e5 en rimelig bil for massemarkedet<\/h3>\n<p>Som en nykommer p\u00e5 personbilmarkedet m\u00e5tte fabrikken velge sin egen vei. Man \u00f8nsket \u00e5 produsere en personbil med egenskaper som ingen av konkurrentene kunne tilby. L\u00f8sningen ble en liten og romslig familiebil med helautomatisk kraftoverf\u00f8ring som skulle v\u00e6re trinnl\u00f8s variabel. Biler med automatiske girkasser fantes p\u00e5 markedet men de bilmodellene var store og kostbare. DAF ville tilby en rimelig bil for massemarkedet. Den tekniske l\u00f8sningen var basert p\u00e5 remmer som overf\u00f8rte kraften fra motoren trinnl\u00f8st til bakhjulene. Systemet ble kalt \u201dVariomatic\u201d. Motoren som ble valgt, var p\u00e5 590 ccm og grunnen til dette var betydelige skattelette p\u00e5 biler med motorer p\u00e5 under 600 ccm og 20 hestekrefter. Motoren var den aller f\u00f8rste fabrikken hadde utviklet p\u00e5 egenh\u00e5nd. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">DAF 600<\/h3>\n<p>Den nye modellen ble lansert i 1959. Siden dette var en spennende nykommer, ble den testet av alle de store bilmagasinene. Bilen fikk litt kritikk for relativt h\u00f8yt lydniv\u00e5 hvor det meste av st\u00f8yen kom fra den luftkj\u00f8lte motoren. Kj\u00f8reegenskapene var gode og den nye kraftoverf\u00f8ringen virket nesten som en differensialsperre. Hvis det ene drivhjulet spant, dro systemet og det andre hjulet bilen videre. DAF 600 ble produsert frem til 1963 og avl\u00f8st av nye modeller.
