Men historien startet rundt 1920 da Carl Borgward etablerte en fabrikk som skulle produsere deler til bilindustrien. Som underleverand\u00f8r fikk han mange gode kontakter i den voksende bilindustrien. Han s\u00e5 store muligheter for gode inntekter og en spennende fremtid. I tillegg hadde radiatorfabrikken hans flyttet inn i nye og romslige lokaler. Bilproduksjonen kom i gang og de f\u00f8rste bilene som ble produsert, var vare og lastebiler med 3 hjul. Noen finansfolk s\u00e5 ogs\u00e5 mulighetene og gikk inn med \u00f8konomisk st\u00f8tte.<br \/>\nBilproduksjonen skj\u00f8t fart og i 1939 kom de f\u00f8rste bilene med navnet Borgward p\u00e5 markedet. Dette var et godt supplement til det eksisterende bilmerket Goliat. Den f\u00f8rste modellen som kom etter krigen, var en moderne familiebil som fikk navnet Hansa. Bilene solgte godt men det virkelige oppsvinget kom da den nye modellen Isabella kom p\u00e5 markedet i 1954.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Borgward Isabella<\/h3>\n<p>Den nye modellen fra Borgward var en virkelig lekker bil. Tallene fra salgsavdelingen indikerte at Isabella kunne bli Borgwards toppselger gjennom tidene. Isabella var en relativt dyr bil, den kostet mer enn tilsvarende modeller fra Ford og Opel. Men utstyr og god plass kunne forsvare den h\u00f8ye prisen. I tillegg var det en av de mest moderne bilkonstruksjonene p\u00e5 markedet. Det resulterte i et meget godt salg den f\u00f8rste tiden. \u00c5ret etter introduksjonen kom det b\u00e5de en stasjonsvogn og en meget lekker kupe p\u00e5 markedet. B\u00e5de den vanlige personbilen og kupemodellen kom b\u00e5de i standard og deluxe versjoner. For den som \u00f8nsket mer utstyr og st\u00f8rre fart, var TS modellene et godt alternativ. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Problemene som ledet til at modellen ble stoppet<\/h3>\n<p>P\u00e5 grunn av mange tekniske problemer i starten fikk Isabella et d\u00e5rlig rykte og salget sank de etter den positive introduksjonen. Nye modeller fra Opel og Ford gjorde konkurransen mye t\u00f8ffere. I tillegg var det mange kunder som ville ha en modell med 4 d\u00f8rer. Den planlagte 4 d\u00f8rs Isabella kom aldri lenger enn til de f\u00e5 prototypene som ble produsert. P\u00e5 slutten av 1950 tallet hadde fabrikken f\u00e5tt s\u00e5 d\u00e5rlig \u00f8konomi at produktutviklingen gikk meget sakte.
