Alle kj\u00f8ret\u00f8y jeg hadde for 20, 30 og 40 \u00e5r siden er for lengst borte. Men jeg tenker videre: <em>&laquo;Hvorfor likte jeg den bilen, egentlig?&raquo;<\/em> For \u00e5 svare p\u00e5 det, trenger jeg \u00e5 se bilen p\u00e5 ny.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Bring it back!<\/h3>\n<p>Bilen jeg \u00f8nsker tilbake, er en 1981 Chevy Suburban. I Norge finnes det spor etter kun 3 stykker av denne modellen. \u00c5ret etter kom Suburban med diesel, og da tok salget fart. Bensinforbruket var formidabelt &#8211; spesielt hvis man kj\u00f8rte &laquo;friskt&raquo;. Jeg husker f\u00f8rste tankfylling. Jeg sa kjekt: &laquo;Full, please!&raquo;. Da pumpa endte p\u00e5 over 120 liter skj\u00f8nte jeg at jeg ikke hadde nok cash. Trodde jeg. Heldigvis var jeg i Riyadh i Saudi Arabia. \u00c5ret var 1982. Da kostet bensinen s\u00e5 lite pr liter at bensinpumpene ikke kunne registrere s\u00e5 sm\u00e5 bel\u00f8p. Det fantes ikke nok desimaler. Derfor m\u00e5tte man gange opp literprisen &laquo;p\u00e5 pumpa&raquo; 10 eller 100 ganger. Jeg sitter med brosjyren for &#8217;81 Chevy Suburban foran meg. Nyhetene for 1981 var sv\u00e6rt sm\u00e5, i hvert fall sett med dagens \u00f8yne. Det eneste jeg kan oppdage, er ny grill med doble frontlys montert over hverandre for Silverado-modellen. P\u00e5 den litt enklere Scottsdale er det bare ett sett med frontlys. De doble frontlysene lyste i hvert fall ekstremt d\u00e5rlig og kunne p\u00e5 ingen m\u00e5te karakteriseres som noen &laquo;step ahead&raquo;. Flyplassen l\u00e5 den gang cirka 5 mil utenfor byen. Den var under bygging og veiene dit var enn\u00e5 ikke helt ferdige. Det var godt \u00e5 ha en solid, h\u00f8ybygd firehjulstrekker ute i \u00f8rkenen, s\u00e5vel som downtown til Souq&#8217;en i den livsfarlige Saudi-Arabiske trafikken. Det var flere m\u00e5ter \u00e5 d\u00f8 p\u00e5. Enten kunne du d\u00f8 i trafikken, eller du kunne for\u00e5rsake annen manns d\u00f8d &#8211; og s\u00e5ledes selv bli d\u00f8mt til d\u00f8den etter landets strenge Sharialover. Tidligere erfaring med tunge biler ga meg selvtillit. Dessuten respekterte folk den store Chevy&#8217;en i trafikken. I bytrafikken brukte du ikke hornet for \u00e5 slippe andre trafikanter og fotgjengere <em>frem<\/em>. Du tutet for \u00e5 fortelle at du faktisk \u00f8nsket \u00e5 benytte deg av forkj\u00f8rsretten din. Hornet p\u00e5 amerikanske biler avgir lyd i en flerstemt harmoni. En viktig egenskap n\u00e5r du kj\u00f8rer med \u00e9n h\u00e5nd p\u00e5 rattet og \u00e9n p\u00e5 hornet.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Realt kj\u00f8ret\u00f8y<\/h3>\n<p>Jeg bestilte brosjyren p\u00e5 eBay. Det er en erstatning for at jeg ikke lenger finner noen ekte &#8217;81 Suburban i Norge &#8211; eller noe annet sted i verden. Alle fikk mye penger mellom hendene, og Suburban ble etter hvert ganske popul\u00e6re med 6.2 liters V8 dieselmotor og toppspekkede Starcraft-utgaver. De aller f\u00f8rste bilene kunne registreres som kombinertbiler. All fornuft tilsa at man skulle velge dieselmotor. Jeg har h\u00f8rt om flere som byttet ut velfungerende bensin-motorer med diesel. Den gang l\u00e5t det fornuftig. Men 6.2-literen er et undermotorisert &laquo;rakleverk&raquo;. 136 HK og dreiemoment p\u00e5 240 Nm ved 2000 omdreininger var ikke mye \u00e5 skryte av, da den kom i 1982. Etter hvert ble ytelsene litt bedre. Mine innvendinger g\u00e5r p\u00e5 lydbildet. Jeg greier ikke \u00e5 forestille meg noen annen motorisering enn V8 bensin i Suburban.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">\u00d8kende Harry-faktor<\/h3>\n<p>Jeg liker &#8217;81-modellens enkelhet. Funksjonelt, enkelt og slitesterkt. Senere generasjoner &#8211; med mer utstyr og luksus &#8211; \u00f8kte etter min mening modellens Harry-faktor. I dag er det blitt en SUV for <em>The Kardashians<\/em> og eiendomsmeglere i New York. Var den 7&#8217;ende Suburban-generasjonen siste generasjonen med enkle og \u00e6rlige biler &#8211; bygget etter gode, gamle amerikanske verdier? Starcraft-modellene som dukket opp ut over 80-tallet, indikerte vel at GM allerede da \u00f8nsket \u00e5 flytte Suburban h\u00f8yere opp p\u00e5 statusskalaen.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Personlighet<\/h3>\n<p>Det siste kortet jeg vil trekke frem, handler om <em>personlighet<\/em>. &laquo;Min&raquo; &#8217;81 Suburban var et enkelt og \u00e6rlig, stort, trygt og uj\u00e5lete kj\u00f8ret\u00f8y med et maskulint preg. En truck etter min smak og personlighet. Det fikk jeg bekreftet da jeg en dag ankom jobben i en splitter ny Nissan Patrol. Da ble jeg stanset i vakta &#8211; som jeg passerte daglig. Normalt hilste jeg bare over rattet mens jeg kj\u00f8rte rolig forbi med alle adgangstegn synlig gjennom frontruten. Jeg beh\u00f8vde aldri stanse. Ikke f\u00f8r n\u00e5.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<em>&laquo;Hvor har du gjort av Chevy&#8217;n din?&raquo;<\/em> spurte vakta.
