Modellen ble utviklet f\u00f8r Citroen tok over Maserati i 1968. En smal, bred front med nedfellbare lykter, frontmontert V8-motor og lekre linjer som endte opp i en rett Kamm-profil. Mange vil nok karakterisere denne bilen som en av verdens vakreste biler. Den ble markedsf\u00f8rt som en Gran Turismo 2+2 seter, skj\u00f8nt baksetene var n\u00e6rmest som krakker \u00e5 regne. De f\u00f8rste bilene fikk 4.7 liter V8-motorer med doble overliggende kamaksler over hver motorbank, dry sump og 315 hk. Senere, fra 1969, kom <em>Ghibli SS<\/em> med 4.9 liter og 355 hk. Girkassa var 5 trinns ZF manuell. Man kunne ogs\u00e5 f\u00e5 den med automat. Den har 5 trinns manuell girkasse og ble opprinnelig importert og solgt via en Citroen forhandler i UK.
