Akselavstanden var uendret. Et h\u00f8yere glasshus ga mer romf\u00f8lelse, men plassforholdene var i realiteten noks\u00e5 like. Begge Karmann Ghia modellene var designet av Ghia. Type 14 var preget av 1950-tallets linjer, mens Type 34 hadde et mer firsk\u00e5rent 60-talls preg. Da den kom i ut p\u00e5 markedet i 1962, var det med 1500-motor mens Type 14 p\u00e5 samme tid hadde 1200-motorer. I 1965 fikk den Volkswagens 1600 motor og dermed sitt offisielle navn endret til <em>Volkswagen 1600 L Coupe<\/em>. I 1966 ble det elektriske anlegget oppgradert til 12 Volt. I 1967 fikk bilene skivebremser foran og i 1968 nytt bakhjulsoppheng og n\u00f8dblinklys. I 1969 ble produksjonen avsluttet. Produksjonen av den opprinnelige Karmann Ghia, Type 14, fortsatte til 1974.
