Den ble omtalt som &laquo;Den lille Lamborghinien&raquo;. F\u00f8rst og fremst p\u00e5 grunn av motoren, en V10 i stedet for V12 &#8211; men ogs\u00e5 p\u00e5 grunn av lengden, litt over 4,3 meter. Gallardo var ogs\u00e5 f\u00f8rste modell som delte drivverk med Audi R8 (f\u00f8rste generasjon). Volkswagen-gruppens overtakelse av Lamborghini har bare hatt fordeler. produsert frem til 2008. Den kom i enten Coup\u00e9 (med tak) eller Spyder (uten tak) &#8211; begge med en 5-liters V10. Serie 2 kom med en ny motor, 5,2-liter V10. Den kom i tre varianter, &#8211; LP550-2, LP560-4 og Superleggera LP570-4. Det ble ogs\u00e5 gjort kosmetiske endringer i forbindelse med facelift&#8217;en. De er ikke s\u00e5 enkle \u00e5 se ved f\u00f8rste \u00f8yekast.
