Den kunne ogs\u00e5 utstyres med en avtagbar hardtop i aluminium. Da den ble introdusert ble det poengtert at bilen skulle v\u00e6re en sikker, rask og komfortabel sportsbil. Tilbakemeldingen fra eierne var at SL var mer <em>Gran Tourer<\/em> enn sportsbil. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Modellhistorikk<\/h3>\n<p>Fra lanseringen p\u00e5 Geneve-utstillingen i 1963 til 1971 ble SL-modellen produsert i 3 serier med 3 forskjellige motorer. 230SL ble produsert fra 1963 til 1967, 250SL i vel ett \u00e5r fra 1967, samt 280SL ogs\u00e5 fra 1967 til 1971. De st\u00f8rste endringene var motorene, utseendet var beholdt noks\u00e5 uendret. Verdt \u00e5 merke seg var at bilene fikk skivebremser p\u00e5 alle hjul fra 1967.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71985\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71985\" style=\"width: class=\"tebh2\">Popul\u00e6re i USA<\/h3>\n<p>N\u00e5r man s\u00f8ker historikken til biler for salg, ser man at mange biler havnet i USA &#8211; som bruktimporterte. Det kan ha sammenheng med en liberalisering av importreglene der. Flere av bilene som ble eksportert til USA, er senere blitt kj\u00f8pt opp av europeiske entusiaster. Flere har havnet i Norge. Amerikanske biler ble utstyrt med runde frontlykter og separate blinklys, mens biler fra Tyskland har st\u00e5ende lykteinnsatser tilsvarende de som satt p\u00e5 W111 &#8211; \u201cthe fin tail\u201d Mercedes-Benz. Videre fikk amerikanske biler ogs\u00e5 st\u00f8tfangerhorn og biler med 2,8 liters motorer ble modifisert for \u00e5 tilfredsstille amerikanske utslippskrav.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Kallenavn \u201cPagode\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Sier du \u201cMercedes-Benz Pagode\u201d, vet alle bilentusiaster hva du mener. \u00c5rsaken til kallenavnet var den spesielle hardtop\u2019en. Den er ganske h\u00f8y, og svakt skr\u00e5nende. Noen syntes det lignet en Pagode &#8211; som, if\u00f8lge <em>Store norske leksikon<\/em> er et buddhistisk byggverk &#8211; sm\u00e5 og t\u00e5rnaktige som skal bringe lykke. De st\u00e5r gjerne ved et tempel. Den hvite bilen i parken deltok p\u00e5 et biltreff i T\u00f8nsberg i 2025. Den hvite bilen med svart hardtop var utstilt p\u00e5 <em>London Classic Car Show<\/em>, 2020.
