For hver ny versjon av modellen vokste den seg st\u00f8rre, for \u00e5 ende opp i st\u00f8rrelsesklasse med de st\u00f8rste Lincoln-modellene. Fra 1977 ble Thunderbird-serien plassert p\u00e5 en mellomstor plattform, basert p\u00e5 Ford Torino, skj\u00f8nt med en total lengde p\u00e5 5,5 meter var det ingen liten bil. De nye, skarpe og rette linjene var i tiden, noe som ogs\u00e5 europeiske modeller fikk. Spesifikt for amerikansk Ford var at B-stolpen var bredere enn C-stolpen. Det samme trekket fikk de mindre Coup\u00e9ene <em>Ford Fairmont Futura<\/em> og <em>Mercury Zephyr Coup\u00e9<\/em>.
