Selskapet ble etablert i 1913 av William Rootes som etter hvert kj\u00f8pte opp og produserte andre bilmerker, som Humber, Commer, Singer, Talbot og Sunbeam. Rootes ble kjent for &laquo;badge engineering&raquo; hvor samme konstruksjon ble brukt av flere bilmerker. Selv om konstruksjon og utseende var noks\u00e5 likt fikk hvert bilmerke egen identitet. Rootes valgte \u00e5 gi merkene forskjellig utstyr, dekor og motorstyrke s\u00e5nn at de forskjellige merkene kunne tilpasses egne kundegrupper. En Sunbeam Rapier raste av sted i et bill\u00f8p mens halvbroren Hillman Minx var p\u00e5 handletur med familien. Rootes ble overtatt av Chrysler og senere av Peugeot i 1978 som tok fabrikkene i bruk for produksjon av egne modeller.
