Bilene var relativt enkle oppbygd og utstyrt.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n<h3 class=\"tebh2_first\">Billig sportsbil for folk flest<\/h3>\n<p>I 1976 kunne du i England kj\u00f8pe en Triumph Spitfire for det samme som rimeligste utstyrte Volkswagen Golf eller &laquo;beetle&raquo; kostet. For samme pris fikk du alts\u00e5 en lekker sportsbil fra et anerkjent sportsbil-merke med 1500-motor og nedfellbar topp. Den lave prisen gjorde det n\u00f8dvendig for produsenten \u00e5 ta noen snarveier. Spitfire arvet mye fra Triumph Herald &#8211; som ogs\u00e5 var ansett for \u00e5 v\u00e6re en rimelig bil i sin klasse. Herald var bygget med karosseri p\u00e5 ramme. Spitfire ble bygget p\u00e5 et avkortet chassis fra Herald. Fra 1962 til 1980 ble det laget 5 versjoner. De to f\u00f8rste seriene hadde 1,2 motoren fra Herald og 4-trinns girkasse som kunne bestilles med overdrive. De tidlige versjonene hadde en annen grill enn bilene p\u00e5 bildene. Grillen var todelt med st\u00f8tfangeren under. Serie III 1967 fikk fronten endret. St\u00f8tfangeren fikk en h\u00f8yere plassering for \u00e5 tilpasse seg nye kollisjonskrav. Bilene fikk ogs\u00e5 st\u00f8rre motor &#8211; 1,3 liter &#8211; samme som ogs\u00e5 satt i Triumph Herald 13\/60. Serie IV fra 1970 kan gjenkjennes ved sort grill i plast, bortfall av kromlister p\u00e5 toppen av skjermene, instrumentene flyttet fra \u00e5 v\u00e6re midtstilte til foran f\u00f8reren og kalesje-topp i stedet for avtagbar glassfibertopp. Den 5. serien ble markedsf\u00f8rt som <em>Spitfire 1500<\/em>. Spitfire er &#8211; og har aldri v\u00e6rt noen superbil. Relativt beskjedne motorer ga likevel akseptable ytelser for sin tid takket v\u00e6re lav vekt. Modellens st\u00f8rste og mest omtalte problem har v\u00e6rt bakhjulsopphenget med svingaksel. Flere bilmodeller har benyttet samme konsept med mer eller mindre hell. Svingakselen i Spitfire kunne f\u00e5 bilene til \u00e5 oppf\u00f8re seg skummelt, spesielt n\u00e5r man kj\u00f8rte sportslig. Hvis man bremset og\/eller giret ned hardt f\u00f8r en kurve kunne bilen plutselig overstyre mer enn man forventet. Fra serie IV (omtrent 1970) fikk bilene en oppgradering av bakhjulsopphenget.
