I dag faller den utvilsomt inn i kategorien &laquo;Verdens cooleste biler&raquo;. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Moderne ideer<\/h3>\n<p>Nash kom raskt i aktivitet etter krigen. I 1945 var de p\u00e5 3. plass over antall solgte biler i USA. Nash 600 var den f\u00f8rste masseproduserte bilen i USA med selvb\u00e6rende karrosseri. Den kunne leveres i et helt nytt aerodynamisk design, kalt Airflyte. De delvis overbygde skjermene ga ikke bare bedre luftstr\u00f8m, men ogs\u00e5 ekstra styrke i karosseriet. For \u00e5 m\u00f8te den fremtidige konkurransen fra de store bilprodusentene (GM, Ford og Chrysler) startet Nash utviklingen av helt nye, kompakte modeller. En av disse var Nash Rambler. Nash iverksatte en grundig markedsunders\u00f8kelse for \u00e5 lodde stemningen for en liten bilmodell som Metropolitan. De sendte ut cirka 250 000 adresserte fargeprospekter hvor de presenterte en prototype av bilen og oppfordret folk til \u00e5 krysse av for hva de likte. Avslutningsvis ble de spurt om hvordan de trodde  en s\u00e5nn bil ville bli mottatt i USA og &#8211; helt til slutt &#8211; om de kunne tenke seg \u00e5 kj\u00f8pe en selv. Bilen som ble presentert, var en prototype. Den var mye enklere utstyrt enn produksjonsbilen. Blant annet hadde den ikke sidevinduer, bare en plastduk man kunne dra opp \u00e5 feste i taket. Foresl\u00e5tte motoralternativ var en p\u00e5 18 HK og en p\u00e5 36 HK. Prisene skulle ligge p\u00e5 rundt 1000 dollar.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Europeisk samarbeid<\/h3>\n<p>Det ville ikke v\u00e6re l\u00f8nnsomt \u00e5 produsere en sm\u00e5bil til 1000 dollar i USA. Nash presenterte derfor prototypen for Fiat, datidens Standard-Triumph og Austin Motor Company for \u00e5 innlede forhandlinger om hel eller delvis produksjon i Europa. Fiat ville benytte drivverket fra 500 Topolino som basis. Austin ville benytte sin nye A40 Somerset-modell som utgangspunkt. Valget falt p\u00e5 Austin. De leverte drivverk basert p\u00e5 sin 1200-modell med 3-trinns girkasse og rattgir. Karosseriene skulle bli bygget av Fisher &#038; Ludlow som like etter ble kj\u00f8pt opp av Austin. Sammensetningen av bilene skulle skje ved Longbridge i Birmingham. De ferdige bilene skulle deretter skipes til USA.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<blockquote><p>&laquo;1400 biler .. mye flottere enn den enkle prototypen. Frontst\u00f8tfanger og grill var separate enheter &#8211; ikke en &laquo;onepiece&raquo; som vist p\u00e5 prototypen. Bilene fikk ordentlige sidevinduer og ble levert i to varianter &#8211; cabriolet eller hardtop. Standard utstyr omfattet blant annet &laquo;continental kit&raquo; med reservehjul bak p\u00e5 st\u00f8tfangeren. Varme\/defroster, radio og hvite dekksider var ekstrautstyr. Ogs\u00e5 drivverket ble bedre enn prospektet. Men prisen ble en god del h\u00f8yere enn 1000 dollar. De f\u00f8rste bilene fikk en prislapp p\u00e5 1469 dollar for cabriolet &#8211; og 1445 for hardtop.<\/p>\n<h5>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Modellhistorikk<\/h3>\n<p>De aller f\u00f8rste bilene rullet ut i oktober 1953 som 1954-modeller. Opprinnelig skulle de markedsf\u00f8res som <em>NKI Custom<\/em>. NKI sto for <em>Nash Kelvinator International<\/em>. Men da bilene kom for salg, var navnet endret til Metropolitan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Serie 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Serie 1 hadde en 1200-motor p\u00e5 42 HK. Bilene  kjennetegnes ved at de var ensfargede, hadde et scoop-formet luftinntak p\u00e5 panseret og grill formet som en liggende krombjelke. Dashbordet var lakkert i bilens lakkfarge og bagasjerommet hadde ingen utvendig luke. Disse bilene hadde serienumre fra 1001 til 11000. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Serie 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Serie 2 fikk ingen utvendige modifikasjoner, bare en ny versjon av 1200-motoren, kalt 1200 B. Denne motoren hadde samme slagvolum og ytelser, men fikk hydraulisk clutchoverf\u00f8ring og ny girkasse. Utvendig forsvant luftinntaket p\u00e5 panseret og grillen fikk et nettingm\u00f8nster. Bilene fikk utvendig luke til bagasjerommet, trekants-luftevinduer p\u00e5 sidene og hel panoramabakrute p\u00e5 hardtop-varianten. Serie 4 har serienumre fra 59048. Den siste bilen ble produsert i 1961 men fortsatt solgt fra lager ut over 1962. I 1954 ble Nash og Hudson sl\u00e5tt sammen til AMC (American Motors Corp). Metropolitan-bilene bar fremdeles merkenavnet Nash &#8211; men ble ogs\u00e5 solgt som Hudson. Man kan vel kalle det en form for &laquo;badging&raquo;? I 1957 forsvant b\u00e5de Nash og Hudson som merkenavn. Metropolitan ble da etablert som eget bilmerke under AMC og bilene fikk ny logo i grillen formet som en stilistisk M. For \u00e5 skape ytterligere forvirring i flommen av merkenavn, fikk Austin tillatelse til \u00e5 selge Metropolitan under merkenavnet &laquo;Austin&raquo; i markeder hvor AMC ikke var representert, for eksempel i Norge. Her ble de tatt inn av dav\u00e6rende Austin-import\u00f8r Erik B. Winther. Det er uvisst hvor mange biler som egentlig ble solgt. Flere av bilene i dagens kj\u00f8ret\u00f8yregister er i alle fall oppf\u00f8rt som Austin Metropolitan. I dag faller Metropolitan utvilsomt inn i kategorien &laquo;Verdens cooleste biler&raquo;. Dette er en av grunnene til \u00e5 skaffe en som hobbybil. F\u00e5 biler vekker mer oppsikt. Jeg har f\u00e5tt studere \u00e9n bil p\u00e5 n\u00e6rt hold, &#8211; den gr\u00f8nne 1954-modellen p\u00e5 bildene. Den har serienummer 1006 (nr 6) og skal visstnok v\u00e6re den nest eldste Metropolitan i verden! Bilens lengde er 3,8 meter og virker solid bygget. Det finnes flere klubbmilj\u00f8er som har som form\u00e5l \u00e5 bevare bilene. I Los Angeles ligger <a href=\"https:\/\/metpitstop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Metropolitan Pit Stop<\/strong><\/a> med nettbutikk hvor &laquo;alt&raquo; kan skaffes til din Metropolitan. Det vil sannsynligvis v\u00e6re mulig \u00e5 skaffe deler til drivverket via Austin-klubber ogs\u00e5. I Norge finnes ingen egen Metropolitan-klubb, men <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcar.no\/klubber\/landsdekkende-klubber\/eight+amcars+club.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Eight Amcars Club<\/strong><\/a> p\u00e5 S\u00f8rum har medlemmer og medlemsbiler fra 8 merker som forsvant, herunder Nash og Hudson. P\u00e5 50-tallet var romfartsinspirert design p\u00e5 moten. Det morsomme her, er at bubble-top-bilen er en ombygd 1955 Nash Metropolitan. Toppen \u00e5pner seg via en elektrisk motor. Tross \u00f8kte ytre dimensjoner veier ikke bilen s\u00e6rlig mer enn en standard Metro. Bilen er faktisk kj\u00f8rbar og vekker naturlig nok masse oppmerksomhet, selv i Los Angeles. Den ene er utstilt p\u00e5 museet hos Met Pit Stop. Dette var alts\u00e5 en prototype som skulle skrotes, men en av mekanikerne ved AMC greidde \u00e5 sl\u00e5 kloa i den og kj\u00f8rte med den i flere \u00e5r f\u00f8r den havnet p\u00e5 museet.
