I England var mange av disse enkle, \u00e5pne roadstere med sportslige egenskaper. Folk hadde mindre penger, og de lette kj\u00f8ret\u00f8yene kunne v\u00e6re et alternativ til motorsykler. Austin-Healey Sprite var et samarbeid mellom Donald Healey Motor Co. og Austin-divisjonen til BMC. Flere komponenter ble hentet fra Austin A35 og Morris Minor, som for eksempel A-serie motoren p\u00e5 948 ccm, tannstang-styringen og forhjulsopphenget. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2ingreslbcenter\">Sprite Mk1 &laquo;Frogeye&raquo;<\/h3>\n<p>Den f\u00f8rste versjonen &#8211; mk1 &#8211; av Sprite ble introdusert allerede i 1958. Den spesielle fronten med utstikkende frontlys fikk fort tilnavnet <em>frogeye<\/em>. Allerede i 1961 fikk Sprite en facelift, en helt ny front uten froske\u00f8yne. Samtidig med annonseringen av Sprite mk2 ble MG Midget lansert. De to bilene var nesten identiske og ble produsert p\u00e5 samme b\u00e5nd. Men det forklarer at det var et marked for en liten sportsbil som Sprite. Mk1 er 3.5 meter lang, veier under 700 kg. Rigget for l\u00f8p, kunne vekten komme under 600 kg. Den lille 948 ccm motoren kunne gi en toppfart p\u00e5 omkring 130 km\/t. Mk2 fikk et helt nytt front og bakparti, nytt dashboard, samt A-seriens 1100-motor.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nFra 1964 kom Mk3 som kan identifiseres ved at den fikk sidevinduer, trekantvinduer og utvendige d\u00f8rh\u00e5ndtak.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nMk4, som kom i 1966, ble utstyrt med 1275-motoren. Visuelle kjennetegn er blant annet mindre st\u00f8tfangerhorn og en nedfellbar kalesje. P\u00e5 tidligere modeller m\u00e5tte man demontere kalesjen og legge den i bagasjen. I dag kan nedfellbare kalesjer ettermonteres, og flere tidligere modeller har f\u00e5tt dette gjort.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nI 1970 fikk bilene en ny matt svart grill til produksjonen stanset i 1971. Et parti biler skal ha blitt produsert etter at Healey hadde trukket seg ut av prosjektet. Disse kan ha blitt solgt og registrert som &laquo;bare&raquo; Austin, men er ellers identiske med Austin-Healey.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71555\"
