Dermed ble prosjektet sendt til Tyskland.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Skapt i USA &#8211; men ble for moderne der<\/h3>\n<p>P4 kom i salg i 1962 som den f\u00f8rste Ford med forhjulstrekk. Man kunne f\u00e5 den med 1,2 liter eller 1,5 liter motor &#8211; begge V4. Opprinnelig ble modellen utviklet i USA som &laquo;Ford Cardinal&raquo; &#8211; en bil som skulle inn i Fords modellprogram under Falcon. Da prosjektet var ferdig, ble det forkastet av toppledelsen i Ford fordi de mente at det ikke fantes noe marked i USA for s\u00e5nne biler. Det fullf\u00f8rte prosjektet ble dermed tilbudt Ford i K\u00f6ln, som s\u00e5rt trengte en etterf\u00f8lger etter sin f\u00f8rste 12M (P1) som begynte \u00e5 trekke p\u00e5 \u00e5rene. Tyskerne satte &laquo;Ford Cardinal&raquo; i produksjon &#8211; visstnok helt uendret i forhold til den opprinnelige, amerikanske designet. Ryktene sier at Ford USA p\u00e5 ett senere tidspunkt skal ha ytret \u00f8nske om \u00e5 tilby 12M i USA, ogs\u00e5. Det skjedde aldri. Den bidro til \u00e5 gj\u00f8re forhjulsdrift mer akseptert og utbredt blant konservative bilmerker. Bilmerker som Citroen, Saab og DKW v\u00e5get \u00e5 v\u00e6re en tanke forut for sin tid innen teknologi og design. Vel hadde Fords nye 12M et konservativt utseende, men V4 motorer og forhjulstrekk representerte noe nytt og moderne.
