Det ble vunnet av Hannu Mikkola og Gunnar Palm med en trimmet Escort 1600 (Kent Crossflow). Den helt nye Escort ble introdusert i 1967 for modell\u00e5ret 1968. Den var bygget p\u00e5 samme m\u00e5te som Ford Cortina mk2, det vil si MacPherson foran, bladfj\u00e6rer og stiv bakaksel bak, Kent Crossflow OHV motorer, bakhjulsdrift &#8211; og tannstangsstyring &#8211; noe Cortina mk2 for \u00f8vrig ikke hadde. Alt var enkelt, fungerte bra og var billig \u00e5 produsere &#8211; i god Ford-\u00e5nd. Det som gj\u00f8r den f\u00f8rste Escort&#8217;en spesiell, er etter min mening det flotte designet med Coke bottle fasong langs sidene og hvor frontlysene og grillen var formet som en de s\u00e5kalte <em>Kent Crossflow<\/em> OHV motorene som for \u00f8vrig satt i Ford Cortina og senere Ford Fiesta. Standardmotorene var 1100 (50 hk), 1300 (56 hk) og 1300 GT (72 hk). Escort Mexico fikk en 1600 (Kent Crossflow) fra 86 hk.
