Dodge hadde muskelbilen Charger, men den var en del st\u00f8rre enn Mustang og Camaro. Da Plymouth lanserte sin 3. modellserie av Barracuda, gikk den rett inn i Pony-klassen. Chrysler-konsernet lanserte samtidig ogs\u00e5 <em>Dodge Challenger<\/em>. Selv om de to modellene hadde en del forskjeller, kunne man tydelig se familielikheten. Challenger var omtrent p\u00e5 samme st\u00f8rrelse som for eksempel Ford Mustang Mach 1 Fastback. Den var tilgjengelig med alle motorene i Chrysler-konsernet sitt personbilprogram. Rekkesekser og flere V8&#8217;ere, herunder Hemi. Dessverre dukket oljekrisen opp i 1973 og ettersp\u00f8rselen etter motorsterke &laquo;sm\u00e5&raquo; biler falt drastisk. Challenger fikk derfor en ganske kort produksjonsperiode &#8211; mellom 1970 og 1974. Etter oljekrisen ville &laquo;alle&raquo; ha japanske eller europeiske biler, og amerikanske fabrikker ble tvunget til \u00e5 nedskalere, &#8211; eller inng\u00e5 samarbeid eller lisensproduksjon av utenlandske biler. Dette skjedde med Dodge sin etterf\u00f8lger &#8211; Challenger 2. Den var fullstendig basert p\u00e5 Mitsubishi Sapporo som var en kompakt bil. Da hadde Ford allerede kommet godt i gang med sin nedskalerte Mustang 2 basert p\u00e5 Pinto-motorer. I ettertid kan vi vel si at oppf\u00f8lgermodellene, Mustang 2 og Challenger 2, ikke lenger ble regnet som gode representanter for ponniklassen.
