Designet dukket f\u00f8rst opp i 1959 i W111. Flere europeiske modeller fikk finner etter amerikanske 50-tallstrend, skj\u00f8nt finnene p\u00e5 Mercedes-Benz var ikke like dominerende &#8211; og vulg\u00e6re &#8211; som p\u00e5 samtidens amerikanere. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">To modeller med finner<\/h3>\n<p>Det ble laget to typer av finne-Mercedes&#8217;en &#8211; W111 for 6-sylindrede motorer og W110 for 4-sylindrede motorer. Sistnevnte dukket f\u00f8rste gang opp som 1961-modell, 2 \u00e5r etter at W111 ble lansert. W110 var en slags &laquo;billigversjon&raquo; av W111. I tillegg til mindre motorer, var den ogs\u00e5 enklere utstyrt. Mindre krom og treverk, samt enklere seter. Spesielt i fronten kunne man skille den enklere W110 fra den litt st\u00f8rre W111. Den offisielle betegnelsen p\u00e5 modellen ble 190. Den erstattet tidligere 180. Den popul\u00e6re ponton-modellen med 4-sylindrede motorer ble likevel produsert parallelt med 190 en stund. B\u00e5de 180- og 190-serien var typiske tjenestebiler &#8211; ikke s\u00e5 mye folkebiler, for \u00e5 si det s\u00e5nn. De var yndet som drosjer. Min f\u00f8rste drosjetur (som jeg kan huske) skjedde i en svart 190 med blinklysene oppe p\u00e5 forskjermene og st\u00e5ende speedometer. Det ble gjort flere endringer b\u00e5de p\u00e5 bensin- og dieselmotoren. Blant annet fikk bensinmotoren \u00f8kt slagvolum til 2,0 liter. Den nye 2,3-rekkesekseren ble tatt inn i modellprogrammet som 230 og ble eneste sekser med den korte fronten.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nDe mest i\u00f8ynefallende visuelle endringene var at blinklysene foran ble flyttet fra oversiden av skjermene til under hovedlysene. Det ble ogs\u00e5 gjort sm\u00e5 endringer av baklys og kromlister. Jeg tror hensikten var \u00e5 dempe inntrykket av finnene, etter som <em>de<\/em> ikke lenger var like moderne som da modellen ble lansert. Storebroren, W111, ble fullstendig omarbeidet. Den fikk et helt nytt karosseri &#8211; uten finner. Det gjorde ikke W110.
