Rootes valgte en annen l\u00f8sning enn BMC. I reklamen ble Hillman Imp&#8217;s fordeler i forhold til Mini poengtert. Den 875 kubikk store OHV-motoren var st\u00f8pt i aluminium. Motoren kunne fjernes og installeres p\u00e5 kort tid (som p\u00e5 en folkevogn). Automatchoke, pneumatisk gassoverf\u00f8ring og ingen sm\u00f8repunkter. Normalt krevde tidlige 60-tallsbiler sm\u00f8ring hver 1500 km eller noe s\u00e5nt. Det kan virke som Rootes hadde lagt mye innsats i \u00e5 skape en bil som var rimelig \u00e5 vedlikeholde. Men etter bilder \u00e5 d\u00f8mme, virker det ganske trangt \u00e5 komme til i motorrommet p\u00e5 Imp&#8217;en. Rootes bygget en helt ny fabrikk i Linwood, Skottland, for \u00e5 produsere de nye bilene. Jeg humrer over en <a href=\"https:\/\/driventowrite.com\/2015\/01\/18\/1963-hillman-imp-roadtest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>artikkel<\/strong><\/a> trykket i <em>The Practical Car Driver<\/em>. En av deres journalister hadde blitt sendt helt opp til Linwood for \u00e5 pr\u00f8vekj\u00f8re den nye Hillman Imp. Motorskribenter ble godt vartet opp p\u00e5 den tiden. Rootes hadde lagt opp en kj\u00f8retur som gikk langs flere utmerkede whisky-destillerier. V\u00e5r mann kunne opplyse om at det var plass til 54 flasker med 16 \u00e5rs single malt whisky i bagasjerommet foran. Jeg er sikker p\u00e5 at disse flaskene var sponset av arrang\u00f8ren. Jeg vet ikke om pr\u00f8vesmakingen gjorde kj\u00f8reopplevelsen bedre, men whiskyen foran ga i hvert fall bedre vektfordeling i bilen. Normal vektfordeling var 42\/58 foran\/bak. Understellet p\u00e5 Imp&#8217;en var imidlertid utformet for \u00e5 motvirke overstyring. Noen opplevde den faktisk som alt for <em>understyrt<\/em>, men det ble visst fikset litt senere i produksjonen. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"tebh2\">Manglet kult-status<\/h3>\n<p>Sammenligner vi Mini med Hillman Imp, er det \u00e5penbart at Mini trakk det lengste str\u00e5et. Dagens sm\u00e5biler bygger jo p\u00e5 samme lest som den opprinnelige Mini&#8217;en. Sett med dagens \u00f8yne, st\u00e5r Imp&#8217;en igjen som mindre praktisk, til tross for at den hadde innlasting gjennom bakvinduet, nedfellbare bakseter og et lite stuerom bak. Imp&#8217;en ble produsert helt frem til 1976, &#8211; de siste \u00e5rene under Chrysler-logoen. Selv om Hillman Imp s\u00e5 ganske moderne og chic ut, greidde den aldri \u00e5 oppn\u00e5 samme kult-status som Mini&#8217;en. Alle britiske popstjerner hadde en Mini, &#8211; selv om de ogs\u00e5 hadde Rolls-Royce i garasjene sine. For en bil som har v\u00e6rt aktiv i s\u00e5 mange \u00e5r innen motorsport, ville det forundre meg om det ikke finnes et godt utvalg av deler for \u00e5 bygge opp et nytt, sportslig understell med oppgraderte bremser, &#8211; og en gocart-aktig kj\u00f8reopplevelse. Kanskje man kan bytte til den litt st\u00f8rre rally-motoren, eller noe lignende fra Chrysler Sunbeam&#8217;s delelager?
