I forhold til alt annet p\u00e5 markedet den gangen, var Corvette meget spesiell, og den skal ha blitt m\u00f8tt med litt skepsis da den ble lansert. Noe av skepsisen l\u00e5 i at bilen var konstruert i glassfiber p\u00e5 st\u00e5lr\u00f8rsramme. En annen \u00e5rsak til skepsisen var at dette var en bil for ung og bekymringsl\u00f8s livsstil uten stor nytteverdi. Det fantes enn\u00e5 ingen V8 \u00e5 tilby. I 1955 kunne GM sette inn sin nye 265 small-block V8 (4,3 liter) sammen med 2-trinns Powerglide eller 3-trinns manuell kasse. To \u00e5r senere, i 1957, ble det mulig \u00e5 kj\u00f8pe en toppmodell av Corvette med st\u00f8rre small-block (283 V8) og &laquo;four-on-the-floor&raquo;. Den girkassa kostet det samme som automatkassa, men er utvilsomt det beste valget.
